Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Sutras d' Patanjali
Der Yoga Sutras von Patanjali

Patanjali wrote this 'yoga system' about 300 BC. It is generally regarded as a natural growth from Kapila's Samkhya system.

The Mahabaharata says "He is wise, who sees the yoga system and Samkhya, as one". The prime distinctions between the two systems are in the nature of certain methods of psychic development, mental control, and occult development.

Patanjali, like his predecessor Kapila, does not dispute the existence of THAT, or Brahman, but like his predecessor, he takes THAT for granted. He accepts the Samkhya doctrine of the Tattvas, or principles of creation and holds to Samkhya conception of the basic principles of the phenomenal universe, i.e. the two opposing but interacting principles of Purusha and Prakriti. Like Kapila, Patanjali postulates the existence of innumerable spiritual entities, Purushas, whose entrance into Prakriti energizes the latter and produces worlds and the manifestations of life forms.
